Dr. Maurice Steve Utap is an experienced Consultant Family Medicine Specialist and
currently serves as the Head of Clinic at Bandaraya Miri Health Clinic, Miri, Sarawak, as well
as the Head of Family Medicine Specialists for the Miri Division. He earned his MBBS from
the University of Malaya in 2001 and later completed his Master in Family Medicine (MMED)
from the same university in 2011. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Care
Dermatology (2017) from the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia and a Fellowship
in Addiction Medicine (2020) from the University Malaya Centre for Addiction Science
(UMCAS). He has completed the PhD research in the field of leprosy among the indigenous
Penan in rural Sarawak in University of Malaya in 2025.
Dr. Maurice has a broad clinical background, having served in various hospitals and health
clinics across Malaysia, including Sibu General Hospital, Sarikei Hospital, University Malaya
Medical Centre, and clinics in Kelana Jaya, Oya Road Sibu, Tudan, and Miri. He currently
supervises pre-gazzettment Family Medicine Specialist in the Ministry of Health Malaysia
Dr. Maurice is also actively involved in the active case detection of leprosy among the
indigenous Penan in rural Sarawak, Malaysia since 2013 till now and is committed in the
elimination of leprosy among the indigenous people in Sarawak.
