Professor Dr. Norhasmah Sulaiman

Professor Dr. Norhasmah Sulaiman is a Professor of Community Nutrition at the Department of Nutrition, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), where she also leads the Undernutrition Research Programme, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on food and nutrition security, maternal and child nutrition, malnutrition across the life course, nutrition among low-income and indigenous (Orang Asli) communities, food and nutrition policy evaluation, behavioural nutrition, development of nutrition assessment instruments, and the relationship between food culture and health.
Professor Norhasmah has extensive experience leading nationally and internationally funded research. From 2016–2018, she served as the Principal Investigator appointed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia to evaluate the National Rehabilitation Programme for Malnourished Children (PPKZM). Between 2020–2022, she was appointed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia and UNICEF as the Principal Investigator for the national evaluation of the Impact and Effectiveness of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSB) Taxation in Malaysia. Subsequently, from 2023–2025, she was appointed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the Principal Investigator for the national study assessing the sugar content of sugar-sweetened beverages served in foodservice operations in Malaysia. She also serves as the National Expert for UNICEF Malaysia in the Outcome Evaluation of the National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia (NPANM III), focusing on maternal, infant and young child nutrition interventions.
Beyond research, Professor Norhasmah actively contributes to national nutrition policy and strategic planning. She currently serves as a Committee Member of the National Technical Working Group for Nutrition Research, National Technical Working Group for Nutrition Advocacy, and the Technical Committee for the Development of Nutrition Research Priorities (NRP) for the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030) under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Her expertise has contributed significantly to the development and evaluation of evidence-based nutrition policies, particularly in food security, sugar reduction strategies, maternal and child nutrition, and nutrition surveillance.
Professor Norhasmah has published extensively in the fields of community nutrition, food security, child malnutrition, indigenous health, nutrition policy, and behavioural nutrition. She is a frequent keynote speaker and scientific advisor at national and international conferences, advocating for sustainable, community-driven approaches to improve nutrition and public health outcomes. In addition to her academic leadership, she currently serves as the Chief of Women's Wing (Ketua Wanita) of Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia, contributing to community empowerment and family well-being initiatives through evidence-informed leadership.
